Vacation!

My tank will be ready to go in a week or so, and I'm going to Mexico in June. If I set the tank up now, and cycle it with like one ocellaris clown in there will it be stable enough by June so I can leave for a week and then come home and start my adding fish (no coral for a while)? I don't want to come home and have a disaster!

I'd suggest finding someone reliable, preferably a fellow reef keeper to look in on it for you. Some people clean tanks for a living. Your LFS might be able to recommend someone if you don't know anyone. Or maybe try joining a local reef club and finding someone through them. I think it would help if you had someone looking after the tank that knew what they were looking at besides Nemo.

If your tank has live rock, you won't need the fish to cycle the tank. I'd personally leave the fish out and let the live rock take care of running your tank through the cycle. It'll definately be ready by June and you won't have to worry about finding someone to feed the fish. Your only worry at that point would be making sure that you find someone to keep up with top off water.

That's my opinion on the subject anyways :)

But if you ever want to take a vacation in the future you will still have to find a babysitter. You might as well do the work now rather than wait.

I have a service that babysits my cats when I go on vacation. The cats stay here at home and the sitter comes by twice per day to feed water and play with the boys.

I will train the sitter to watch the tank as well.

It's not cheap but it's the best way to handle it.

Regards,

Pat
