venturi question

just setup a coralife super skimmer which has the venturi inside the skimmer body.

have been running it with a sedra 3500 NW with a venturi on the intake of the pump also.

is it counter productive to have both venturis?

should i pull the inside venturi or have both?

it has produced some skimate, but could be better i think.

Nathan,

It would be counter productive. When you have the venturi on the inlet side you are already loosing some pressure by the time it hits the outlet, there wouldn’t be enough to be of any benefit to the outlet venturi. Your best bet is to mesh mod the impeller. I may have some enkamat left if you want to give it a try.

thanks lak,
something didn't seem right when i set it up.

im going to pull out the venturi from inside the skimmer and replace it with tubing instead.

thanks for the offer, i actually have modded a few other impellers and have some enkamat left over. i was justing waiting to see how well the needle wheel did before i modded it. was also trying to decide if i should use this sedra or a rio 1700 (650 gph)

the rio moves a lot more water, but the sedra has a much bigger volute.

what do you think?

I can't speak of the Sedras since I've never used one before but I have a Rio 2100 on my recirculating skimmer. I did have to get creative with PVC fittings to get them to fit on a 3/4" pipe diam. That said, I'm still at the stock dimensions on the input and output, just needed to get it to be able to connect to the skimmer body.

I am using the stock impellar and am getting a lot of bubbles in the reaction chamber. I'm just watching it for now before jumping in on a mesh mod.

so the rio 2100 works pretty good then?
will be interested to hear how the mesh mod goes. keep us posted.

removed the stock venturi and the skimmer works a lot better now, much thicker foam. am considering the recirc mod and then feeding it directly from the overflow. just need to order some more uni-seals.

It is working pretty good. I'm debating on when to do the mesh mod on it since I don't want to kill the impeller and get stuck waiting for a new one :)

He's a video of it on its maiden voyage in new SW:

thanks for the vid Brian,
kinda hard to see the bubble details in the vid, but looks like a lot "milkyness" in there. looks a lot more effective than what i got going and am pretty sure im going to re-circ it, just need the time. how did you connect the pump to the skimmer body? those aren't uni-seals.

I took 3/8 acrlic and cut squares about 1/4" larger than the pipe diameter. I then heated them up in my kitchen oven for about 8-10 mins and then held them to the tube and let it cool. It took a few tries to get all of them to sit right, but ended up with the same contour of the reaction chamber. I then glued them to the base and let dry. Then I drilled holes in and secured it with Weld-on 16 to a short piece of PVC tube then attached the modified union couplings.

wow, sounds tricky, think ill use uni-seals.
had one leak on me and hope i dont have any leak issues because the skimmer needs to mounted externally.
thanks for the info Brian.

It wasn't that hard, took some time, but that was mostly heating, then holding and cooling. Would work pretty easy if you had someone there to splash cold water on it. I had t do it all by myself. I was going to mount externally but am running out of room so it went in sump. I wanted to have something more sturdier than uniseals :)
