Very OT: I need help from computer (XBox Live) people......

I don't think I am completely internet dumb or anything, but just want to see what I can do.

So, I was playing Call of Duty a couple of weeks ago, this guy got mad at me when he told our team how great he was doing, and I pointed out that his team lost 200- 77.

As a result, he kindly stated that I wouldn't laugh when he found out what my IP address was and overloaded it.

Evidently he wasn't kidding. Ever since that day, I can't stay online for more than a couple of minutes. My connection always goes in and out now (when it never did that for 3 + years).

I have reset my modem a number of times. I have even left the modem off over night, hoping to re-set things....thinking it would somehow give me a new IP address. It didn't.

What can I do to get a new IP address so that I can actually use my XBox Live again?

Now, my home computer and Xbox run on different IP addresses. I know this because I did an ipconfig run on my computer to see if it was the same....it wasn't. My computer's internet works just fine. No problems at all I am only having problems with my xbox. So, can I just use the IP address from my computer? Will I have to change the subnet mask and gateway as well? What about the DSL settings or whatever?

Does anyone know of a list of IP addresses I can use to manually change my "Automatic" IP adress that Xbox finds, to something that works?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Also of note..if interested, I have gone to www.whatsyouripaddress.com. I can see that my ipaddress is out of Schaumburg (I live in Cary about 30 miles away). It also tell me that IP address is private. Would the distance of the IP address from my house manke any difference at all?

Sorry to ask a lot of questions, but any help would be appreciated.

Lets start with some basics :) Who is your provider and what equipment are you using for modem/router? Are you running the Xbox wireless or wired?

your local IP is different from your external IP.
Every computer/xbox in your home gets an IP from your router. These are usually 192.168.1.xxx

If you use comcast cable internet, the IP given to you is dynamic, meaning it may change every so often. (every few days to months)

You may have luck by doing the following:
logon to your router. (lynksys are 192.168.1.1) username is probably blank and password is "admin" as the default

Go under WAN settings. Click on DHCP Release. Wait some time and click DHCP Renew. Hopefully you'll have a new IP from your internet provider

You know, the more I think about this, the less likely it seems that someone is attacking you. The likelihood that some guy was able to get your IP through XBox live is really slim. And if he really pulled this off, he'd only see your outside address. If he were to say start a DOS attack on your IP, you'd see it from both your PC and the XBox, not just the Xbox. I'm going to say it's probably a coincidence. Most likely the real problem is an issue with the wireless from your XBox to your modem (I'm making an assumption that you are playing wireless there) I don't think just refreshing your IP is going to help.

I used to get knocked out when my house phone would ring. Apparently my cordless phone and wireless internet where the same frequency. I think it was 5.8 ghz.

Sorry, basics are good. I have a DSL connection with AT&T, there highest speed DSL (which I believe is 6-9 Mps). I have their standard modem (the same one I have had for three years), it's a Speedstream 4300 (or something like that).

My XBox is hooked in my internet through a wireless connection. I have a NetGear Wireless router. Everything in my home is wireless. I set up the router. I secured the network. Yes, I am sure my network is secure. Distance between the router and the Xbox is not the problem.....at least it hasn't been for 3 years, so I can't believe it is the issue now after all that time.

It's not unusual for a three year old router (especially NetGear) to start having issues. It could also be the wireless adapter in the Xbox. Routers are cheap, so I'd start by picking up a Linksys WRT54G to replace the NetGear. Is the wireless on the Xbox internal or is it something you plug into it?

So Dragon, are you saying that I should consider buying a new wireless router for my XBox? Are you saying that you think my Xbox router may be going the way of the crapper?

I've read about IP overloading some. It seems like it is possible for someone (with more knowledge then me) to be able to hack into an account, overlaod it with many data streams, and basically make it so that your IP address is processing at a much slower rate because it is taking in so much information at once.

If you think this is unlikely, and that it could be the router, I can replace that. It's not cheap, but it's an easy fix.

I have not hooked up the xbox with an ethernet cord to check and see if it could be the router, but that's because the xbox is 50 feet away from my NetGear router and modem. I would like to avoid that if at all possible.

It's something you have to plug into the xbox. To buy a new one is $99. It has a light on it. It is green when it is working approrpriately, and flashes red when it is broken, damaged, or supposedly no longer working. Mine has always flashed green.

So you think maybe I should be looking to replace my wireless router that is in my home? Not the xbox router. I can do that, if that is what you think needs to be done.

If it was a router issue though.....why would I not be having these same problems using the internet on hy home laptop when I use the wireless connection?

sorry, I know I am asking a lot of questions. I just want to get this problem fixed. It's annoying as heck!

Would information be in the logs on your router site? You may be able to block something to help.

I am on Netgear's site right now. If there is a way to do this, I can't see it on the website. The site basically just wants to sell me more of their stuff.

When I get home from work, I can try Thinice's idea as well. I know thw ruoter has an address to go to listed on it.

Kmiec means the log files kept on your router's web interface, not NetGear's site. You are quite right, if the NetGear is the problem, you would expect to see issues with every wireless device connect to it but that is exactly the issue I had with my router. My laptop just wouldn't stay connected, but my Wii and PC had no issues at all. I replaced the router and problem solved. I may have a spare lying around you could have, I'd hate for you to buy a new one and it not end up being the problem.

IP overloading is basically what a DOS (Denial of Service) attack is. The problem with that scenario is that first, he'd have to figure out what your IP is and from what I know about XBox live I can't see how he'd be able to do that.

Steri - I would say it would be your router too. Also it could be your live account. I know it sounds weird but all of a sudden one day, my xbox live account wouldn't log in automatically but I could log in fine if I first did a network test and then logged in. What you can do is delete your gamer tag from your hard drive and then run the built in "Xbox Live Gamer Tag Recovery" from your xbox.

I don't believe this so called hacker could have done anything. He would have to have an inside connection at AT&T to figure out what IP address was assigned to you.

I would seriously consider another router or doing that gamer tag recovery thing before you worry anymore about someone, somewhere hacking your network.

Thank god someone who has an Xbox showed up :) My knowledge is strictly PC/Network based, I've never actually used Xbox live before. Try sh0tyme83's trick first.

Dragon,

You weren't the first to suggest to me that it may be my router. I had a hard time believeing that it could be the router based on my laptops still working with the wireless connection, and based on the timing of this idiot saying he was going to hit me with a DOS on XBOX live.

But, a couple of my friends have told me that I should count myself lucky that I have gotten as much time out of a NetGear router as I have. They seemed pretty sure that it was the router causing the problem based on NetGear's history and the length of time that I have owned the router, and recommended I get a Linksys router.

haha... yea I know how that is. ask me anything about how playstation 3 does there stuff and I'm completely lost..

Thanks shoty for your advice. It is good to get the perspective of anotehr gamer. I think I will just get a new router.

I have tried that test.....a number of times. That didn't work for me. I must have sat one one night for 2 hours with the stupid xbox, trying every test and silly thing I could to get the thing connected. Nothing was working. Then the next day, it would work fine, the day after that it would work for a few minutes then shut down. Right now it is so unpredictable.

The more i talk about it and talk to others about it, the more I am getting convinced its a router issue.
