vinegar to clean equipment?

Is it ok to use vinegar to clean saltwater aquarium equipment? I have a carbon filter that I used in my fresh water aquarium and I want to use it for my new FOWLR tank I am going to set up. It's been sitting dry for about a year, and it has some good scum build up on it. I was wondering if it was ok to use vinegar to clean it up, or should I just buy a new one?

Vinegar is fine for equipment, but the carbon if it was used has very likely lost it's ability to absorb anything from your FOWLR tank, since it's been used already.

Cool. Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I didn't plan on using the same carbon. Just the housing. Thanks again.

Vinegar is like 1.30 a gallon... Works like a charm.

Works great for me a well. I mix 1 gallon vinegar to 4 gallons water and keep it in a 5 gallon bucket w/ lid. Works great for soaking stuff for a few hours or overnight. Plus just put the lid back on and save it for next time.

Happy reefing!
