vortex on the maxi jet mod

is there a way to have this monster not have a huge vortex. I have to have this pump pretty much at the bottom to have no vortex. If I have it close to thebottom the sand sucks up from the bottom.....

i have the shroud turned where the inward flow going in is a the top on the shroud.
