Hi everyone,
Wake up this morning to find this huge hole in the mantle of my 7" derasa. Is she
doomed or there is a chance for recovery?Better yet, who's the culprit?I have but one or two hermits and never seen them near this clam,no fish has ever
bother with either exept tangs cleaning it's shell.Man,this is starting to give me a pain in my head:mad:

Gene,

I have seen a fish go after a clam for no reason except maybe seeing something that they thought might be a piece of food.

Thanks for reply Barry,
I thought of fish as well, though this clam
reacts to any shadow so quickly so I'm not sure of the perp at this time. She looked fine last night and this morning there is hole in the mantle.I,m going to set up a watch tonight and planning to shoot to kill:smokin:I'll post if there is any
changes.

Garry,
Thanks for giving me a hope:) .I love this clam and loosing it would definately make a bad day even worse.I know that moving clams from tank to tank is a baad idea, but in this particular case,do you think I shoul try to move it to my other tank.it has mach smaller fishes .

Thanks,

Gene.

I don't know the "conditions" in the "other" tank.
The lighting and water parameters must be good for you to consider moving it...?
It looks like your T. derasa is large enough to have no byssus gland.
However,if it is attached, I wouldn't move it.
Watch to see if it continues to get harrassed.

Yes Gary,
conditions are very similar exept for the lights and going from 250 to 175's scares me a bit,so I think I'll take your advice and just keep my eye on it,like alot.As far as bysal gland, very hard to see becouse the opening is very small,or should I say tightly closed when I take the clam out for examination.Plus it's on sand and is not attached. It does move and turns once in awile however.I'm starting to suspect my clarkii since she's been digging and moving some ruble lately. You think she could of drop something on the clam?Sorry for all the questions it's just I'm so frustrated with this. This clam has been in this tank for almost a year and outlived many problems.

Thanks,
Gene.

Hmm, that sucks, if it is a hole, but from that pic, it looks like it is the excurrent siphon opened extremely wide. I don't see the excurrent in that pic, unless it is the "hole".

K.Lee,
If you look closer, the hole is just pass incurent syphon. Now,the excurent is way beyond the hole. This is derasa and the exc.syphon is large but not the opening.
Thanks for your interest:)

Gene.
