Want to use computer fans for the reef

I'm looking for a way to somehow cool my tank just a couple degrees and making this a DIY project is probably as cheap as it gets. I would like to replicate these fans as show in this thread. If someone can tell me exactly what I would need to replicate this as much as possible that would be great!

I used Plexiglass, here are a few photos.
The fans are light so it didn't take much to hold them on the tank, it does need to be tight

How many CFMs should I be looking for in a fan?

Mine are 1600rpm cfm63.7,git the Fluid Dynamic Bearing it should be less noise.

These are the fans I got. I bought them for about $10 each, and spliced them into a cheap $1.00 extension cord. Total cost was $11. They work great. I later bought a standard light diming switch from home depot and spliced it into the wireing and now I can slow the fan down as much as I want to reduce noise.

I thought you needed to use a transformer (like an old cell phone charger) - is it safe to just plug them into an outlet like that?

That's kind of what I was wondering. I thought the wall sockets give a certain amount of power that would be too much for the fan.

Those are AC powered fans. Thats why he doesn't need the transformer. The transformer converts AC to DC so you can use a computer case fan that works with DC power.

Where did you buy the fans? One of the AC powered fans for my Hamilton lights is getting too loud. How loud are they?

Like stated previously, this is an AC fan so it plugs right into the wall of your home. Unless your a communist and have a DC powered home

I thought the fan was a little loud at first when it was on full blast, thats why I hooked up a light dimmer to it. Fixed that problem.

I bought some cheap 120mm LED fans from Ebay, Got a AC/DC fan adapter from Frozencpu.com and mounted them to a piece of eggcrate. The Fans have 3 leds each and come prewired, They have Male/Female connections and can be daisy chained so only 1 power supply is needed.

This is just temporary until my fabricator builds a fan box out of acrylic. I am very surprised about how much my Temp has dropped- My chiller kicks on at 80 but my temp hasn't gone above 78 since turning the fans on.


The whole setup was about $30 (AC/DC adapter was the most expensive part). It will cost me around $15-$20 to replace the fans, hopefully I'll get 6 months of use out of them... we'll see

I really like the fan setup ConcreteReefer has going on. I'll most likely try something like that out.

Concrete, do you think you'll be able to post or PM me the ebay link for where you purchased your fans? Also, if you can, post some pictures of the box that is being made when you get it.

I've been looking around for the fans on ebay and I think I found one made by thermaltake. How do I know if a fan can be daisy chained? I definitely plan to buy the AC to DC adapter from Frozencpu. I just want to make sure I am not going to buy fans that cannot be daisy chained.

i picked up a few 5$ 80cfm case fans from newegg.com and they work great.
