Wanted to share some of my snorkel shots from the Big Island, Hawaii

I just wanted to share some photos of my snorkeling in the Big Island of Hawaii last March 29th to April 5th, 2006. The snorkeling site was just next to the hotel where I stayed for a week. The water was clear and shallow yet you could see a lot of different fish such a surgeons, tangs, butterflies and green sea turtles. I took this shot early morning so I wasn't able to take photos of some of the other fish:

A school of yellow tangs:

Green sea turtle that I was able to touch:

A foogoo, the size of a dog, that kept following me wherever I go:

Bottom shot of the bay. I was tempted to collect some frags:D :

A shot of school of Butterflies that swam towards me. Such a surreal feeling:

And of course a photo of myself having fun. I felt that I was inside this huge reef tank with all these fish!:

TEMPTED TO COLLECT=secretly took

:)

Glad you had such a blast.

The Big Island really is an amazing place. In the span of 24 hours, I was within arms reach of flowing lava and swimming with wild dolphins.

Dont mess with the turtles though, its illegal to touch them for a reason.

You can always go and do that in Gabriels tank  JK

Honestly though that is awesome! How big was that turtle? WOW thats tight!

Thanks Sam.

The turtle was big about the size of a 3 year old boy. I tempted to swim with it by holding the back flippers. Good thing I didn't do otherwise I get penalized because they are endangered species. I just touched it quickly.

My friend got attacked by a 12 inch Humuhumu Trigger. I was laughing out loud. I gues the fish was territorial or it has some eggs to protect.

When did you go?

I'm glad I didn't swim with the turtles by holding it's back fins. Otherwise, I was in big trouble.

what kind of camera did you use?

It was a cheap reusable waterproof camera with flash that I bought for $15 from ABC Stores.

Great pics! Thanks for sharing!

I really liked the Racoon Butterflies swimming toward you, really neat shot.

Any chance of uploading higher res shots of that and the school of tangs? I think they would make REALLY cool wallpaper for my desktop!

Nice pics. When we visited the BI in August, I was surprised at how unafraid the turtles are. I was snorkeling one morning and then out of the blue comes one headed right towards me. I thought it would shy away but it kept charging ahead and I found myself in a game of chicken with a turtle?! Had to dodge him at the last minute as there was no changing this turtles course or mind.

I was surprised too with these turtles, even all of the fish there. They didn't care that people were all over them. They kept on nipping on the rock for some algae even with us present.

Did you go to Keauhou Bay?

Sorry, the shot came out bad. I just fixed it using Adobe Photodeluxe. I was using a cheap camera or maybe the film was already expired.

The school of butterflies swimming towards me was really cool. I even touched a couple of them because they were so close. Maybe they thought I'm gonna feed them.

Snorkeling in Hawaii

Same foogoo with a moorish Idol behind him:

Here are some more shots of that foogoo which was stalking me:

A tang and I believe a niger trigger- they kept on feeding on algae even though there was a plenty of snorklers around:

I don't remember if we went to Keauhou Bay off hand. We had our one year-old with us so I didn't get to do much snorkeling. I did snorkel off the beach in front of the Hapuna Prince as well as in and around our hotel, the Hyatt Waikoloa (aka Disneyland).

Keauhou Bay is next to Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort. You don't need to drive. It's very convenient . When did you go? :)
