wanting a mantis

i like my 10 gallon hex setup - it's very attractive. all you need is the tank, a couple inches of substrate, a little hang on back power filter, a piece of liverock or two, a heater, and you're all set!

they will eat alot of different things. i feed mine krill, shrimp, and mysis and sometimes bits of fish.

I would go with acrylic just to be on the safe side. They are known to break glass. Though it isn't too common, why not take precautions :)

Mine lives in the "caves" of a water-worn live stone, and eats live common shore shrimp, P. vulgaris, that I collect from the local saltmarsh.

When he's not hungry, amazingly, he leaves them alone unless they try to crawl in one of the exits or entrances to his little fortress. So basically all I have to do is keep the water clear and the salinity stable and make sure that there's always a couple live shrimp bumbling around eating algae off the mantis's rock.

Really the only thing I've been concerned about is temperature.

It's an INCREDIBLY interesting and low-maintenence pet so far. Really.

:apologetic hijack: Oh, Gonodactylus, If you're lurking, I found that my mantis came from Fiji live rock, and now that I've gotten a good look at him, he has blue-white smashers and mouthparts and dark spots on his raptorial appendages.

I can't seem to get a good digital pic, and it's going to be some time before I develop any of my 35mm film, so here's a cartoon mugshot. It's exaggerated as heck, but you get the general idea and coloration.

...any clue to the identity of the wee snappy beastie?
