water temp and return pump

I want to get the return pump out of the water in the sump in an attempt to get the water temp down. I have a mag 7 in sump now. My sump is not drilled, nor do i have space to place the pump beside the sump (does that make sense?). My plan was to build a platform that raises the pump out of the water, attach a 90 degree elbow to pump intake, and pull water out of sump. The pump will only pull water about 10". Will this work? If so, what will happen to the pump in case of a power failure? Will it be ok to run dry for a few seconds while it primes? Should I put a check valve on the intake tube to keep water from draining completely?
Any thoughts?

I don't think that it will make any difference unfortunately. the Mag 7 is still going to cool itself with the water passing through it even though it is plumbed "externally."

IME mags are not self priming but this may just be my situation. If they aren't self priming then your plan will not work.

Have you tried just adding a fan to help cool?
