I bought some exhaust fans off ebay for under $20 shipped. I hooked them to a temp controller (Ranco) and it cools a 90 and a frag tank hooked to it to 79. Oh and they are 55w and 55cfm.

My LPS dominated (Lords, Micros, etc.) tank has been going from 80 in the am to 85 in the late afternoon / evening. I have seen no ill effects.

It has been shown that water temps in the Fiji area increase to 86 degrees during the hotter months.

As for home temps, its all up to the corals. Watch them and see how they react. Remember also there is a plus to higher temps, metabolism increases also.

As for cooling, I lifted my canopy up off the tank about 2 inches to get a cross breeze, tipped up the seaswirl to create more surface agitation and am running a fan over the surface during the day.

Daily temps go from 77 to about 80.5 at the end of the photoperiod.

I reached 86 last week and all the corals were fine. A turbo snail and my Fromia Star were the only casualties 8(

I just lost 4 Elegance corals when my temp went up to 88. The temp in the wild does climb to the high 80's, but it is often fallowed by mass bleaching of the corals in the area. I keep my temp below 80 now by using fans and frozen water bottles.

I have one of the biotope controllers and have the temp threshold set at 82. If the temp gets that high, the controller shuts the lights off until the temp goes down a bit. Works very nicely. :)

I would say that right on the border of becoming nervous. I wouldn't like mine to go above 82.

Personally I keep my tank at 77.

77 is pretty low for corals. average ocean temperatures where corals grow is 83 degrees i believe. i personally leave mine at 81 to give a little bit of room incase something happens and the tank starts to heat up. running the temp at 77 will definitely slow coral growth.

The tanks normally run at about 79. Hitting 82 is pretty unusual. Only on days that peak in the 90s do the tanks sometimes get over 80 by days end, and some of the lights kick off.

I run my tank at that temp because I have mostly non indo acans and micros, which come from cooler waters. I was told by a coral farmer that he runs his at 74-75. Personally I didn't want my chiller kicking on that often.

I run my tank at between 78-80. Unless you plan to run the tank at 83 all year long, I would invest in some fans or a chiller.
