Heavenly Damsel

Where can I find a web site with pictures so I can ID the mantis my son caught yesterday off the NC coast?

It is grey and green with bright green eyes. Will try to get pictures today.

Thanks for your help.

The species is probably Squilla empusa, a common spearing stomatopod that can be found from Maine to the Caribbean. They burrow in mud from the intertidal down to 20 m or more. The green of the eyes is a reflective layer that increases the sensitivity of the eye (like a cat). These animals are nocturnal, hence the need for highly sensitive eyes. The largest one I ever saw was about 8 inches - most are 4-5. They typically feed on shrimp and worms and are commonly taken is shrimp hauls.

I can't remember if I have posted any other Squilla empusa images on this site but there should be one of a female laying eggs in a thread called "sex pictures" that I started last December.
