Well water purification help needed.

I live in the mountains so water must come from a well.
My water is really silty and clogs filters very fast. Any attempt
at filtering it requires a new filter in a weeks time. I am forst to buy my water in gallons an has been the sole reason for my tanks
size restictions. Even keeping my 55 gallon is a chore due to water changes.
I want to get a nice ro/di unit but the 3 stage RO unit i have didnt last a week before it was cloged. Dont want to have a new RO/DI unit glog up in a few days.
I dont mind building a prefilter of some kind but must be something that can be cleaned or im back to changing filters all the time.

I was thinking about a backwashable sand filter, a small one sold
for filtering a swimming pool. Use that as my prefilter. but im not sure that would filter down to smaller than 5 microns or even close. maybe with a different filter media? i dont know.

Thats the only thing i can think of that might even slightly clean the water before entering a prefilter then the ro/di.

Any thoughts on the matter would be great. Gallon jugs of water get costly.

You might try posting in the Spectrapure forum here at RC to see if they have filters that might be useful. I was talking to them yesterday and I believe that they said they have (or soon will have) a particulate filter than may clog much more slowly.

Check with the local water treatment/softener people in your area. You probably need a whole house filter or bag type prefilter before the RO filters to keep them from clogging up prematurely. Bag type filters are washable and reusable so there are no ongoing maintenance costs.

I also live in mountains, and have interesting issues with my well.

I put this in between my well and the rest of the plumbing:
http://www.rusco.com/

I had a plumber do it, but the entire thing, including installation, was less than $100.00. What is great about this is that it is super easy to rinse (just open it up and place a bucket under it for a moment), and you can change the filter sizes around pretty cheaply to meet your exact requirements.

Thanks for all the info, I knew there had to be a way to do it, and that rusco filter may just do the trick.
