i have been using a wet/dry system with my reef tank and i was told that using a wet/dry system on a reef tank is actually bad for the tank? something along the lines that it will cause nitrate problems. I am considering going with the refugium and skimming aproach. is this rumor true or not?

does anyone that is running a wet/dry system on their reef have any problems with nitrates caused by the filter system? i'm wondering if i should switch to a skim, refuge system instead?

nitrates are a slight problem with a w/d....BUT, with regular maintenance (water changes, etc)...you should be able to keep this in check.

I had a W/D on my system for awhile. It did cause nitrates to rise. It started off great but then just keeps everything on the BB's and in the filters. It was a pain to clean so i used the overflow and return to make a fuge and the tank has been damn near maint free and running strong so far (3 months). IMO, I would swap out the W/D for a fuge.
