What are the best power heads

for the money. I do not mean the most expensive, but the best in gph and not breaking down.

I have a 70 g tank and I am buying everything I need for it. What I have in my hex (I am transfering everything from that tank to the new one, won't be strong enough. I am giving them to my neighbor

Oh yeah, I want easy (if ther is any) SPS, LPS and softies in this tank.

Thanks for your help, Kristin

Just mod a MJ900 or two and call it good. You can look on the DIY forum and find the instructions. HTH

oops, its a 75 g tank

I tried to find the DIY for the maxi jets, but couldn't. Does the mod increase water flow? Is it hard to modify them? They sure are cheap.

Other than going SEIO, Tunze, or Vortech, yes the MJ900 is the powerhead of choice.

What's wrong with the 1200?

the mj1200 uses 21W of power for 295gph, whereas the mj900 uses only 8.5W for 230gph. So the 900s are a more effiecient powerhead than the 1200

What he said. ;)

My only issue with the 900 is that the couple I had would not always spin back up after losing power. I knew they were not as powerful, but maybe the larger motor helps the 1200 start up every time....

Could be. I don't think very many people have had problems with them starting up though, as they seem to be the powerhead of choice for wavemakers also. Maybe you got some bad units...

I have two MJ 1200 with mods in my 125, still having trouble making everybody happy with the flow, specially the clams :)

I wonder if constant on-off is better that only being off if the power goes out.
Or...I may need to actually clean them!

What is the amount of flow I

am looking for?

75 gallon,
150 lbs live rock
live sand
skimmer

nothing else, no sump or anything. how many mj900 would do the job?

forget about the DIY mj900

forget about the DIY mj900

I have arthritis really bad and have trouble doing things with drill and stuff. Would most likely drill my finger instead! LOL!!!

Any others that don't need DYI stuff done to them?

Gosh, I was thinking you'd have a return too. Perhaps you may be better off with 2 appropriately sized SEIO's (though they are a little touchy with restarting) but they do seem pretty durable. Some people are ok having 4+ powerheads in a tank, but some aren't (looks-wise).

I have 2 MJ900's in a 60g along with a Mag7 for a return. I still would like more flow and I have only softies and LPS.

what size SEIO

what size SEIO

and how many? I was thinking 1100 x 2 and I have one power sweep 270gph that I may keep. If not, what size should I go with and how many?

Thanks, Kristin
