What are the signs a clam is not getting enough light?

It will be "panning" for light as much as possible. What I am saying is that it will be opening as much as possible to get what little light there is that is getting to it. You will notice the mantle is extending as far as possible past the edge of the shell to get light for photosynthesis to feed its zooxanthelae. Hope this helps, Freed

Will a clam also get darker/browner as it tries to create zooxanthelae to compensate for low light?

Yes, for instance, a crocea or maxima may turn an ugly brown color to compensate for low light....

Not a pretty sight.
