what do you think the goal of OMAS should be?

i guess another question to ask is what is OMAS trying achieve? increased membership? to what end? increase membership dues received? why increase membership? what is the goal?

any answer is correct... a social club, an evil society of fish watchers... an educational forum...

Travis brought up the question of "How do you help OMAS?" http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=7007648#post7007648

In the interest of keeping threads topical... I've started a seperate thread for this question...

so tell us...

what do you think the goal of OMAS should be?

Personally, I think the ultimate goal should be education. Both in and outside the club. My dream of OMAS would be to work along side participating LFSs and even the Oklahoma Aquarium in education of members and the public. Which is pretty much what we do, and we are slowly progressing to that phase.

A minor goal that I would like to see is a more stable aquaculturing program. This most likely won't progress beyond the Donor Program, because of the serious commitment it would take to do it. But I'm very proud of OMAS for adopting a Donor Program.

Not necessarily a goal here, but I would like to see more mingling between members. I realize there might be conflicting attitudes between members, but just getting a group together and go to a restaurant, bowling alley, bar, etc. I know that a couple members have attempted to do this before. I applaud the effort, and was disappointed that I couldn't go along.

All the rest of the little stuff will most likely fall into place if we do a good job. Membership, funds, advertising, sponsorship, etc.

Unfortunately, only a fraction of OMAS members browse the forums and you could probably count on your fingers how many people post.

that's why i commented that there were 38 views and only 1 post.

i don't expect that everyone in OMAS is on RC. but i would hope that there would be more interest in developing a goal for the organization.

it seems that i have offended the masses.

so be it...

You didn't offend me. Its just that after 15,000 threads about making OMAS better I think its time we take action or take a break. Are you actually trying to make OMAS better, or just be a temporary leader in self-created thread? I'm not saying this to just be a jerk. But, I am seriously wondering if this is an asset to the club or a waste of bandwidth.

You can rally the troops all you want. But, if you don't start marching, you won't win the war.

Jared -

those are excellent comments - insightful, and clear - thank you!

i'll answer in 2 ways -

1. i'm living in LA now. for me to "start marching" would be a long freakin' march. :)
2. i'll never accept the status quo for being perfect or "good enough". it is a flaw in my personality that i will always work to make something better.

as for if this thread is an asset to the club or a waste of band width, it could be either.

but would i be a better person for not asking the question? i don't think so. i asked the question; what everyone else does with it is their own choice.

i stand by my choices. perhaps i stand alone.

I'm just saying that if we want to make OMAS better, let's have fun and be a club, not an overly-critical aquatic government. People are at work all day, they come home and mess with their tank to relax and have fun. That is what the club should be; a group of people who come together to spread their passion and have fun. When the club becomes a job, it is about as appealing as waking up every morning to have an overly-critical boss riding your butt to meet quota. If people wanted that, they would go to work, not join an aquarium club. Sure, the club can't be all fun and no work, but that is why officer positions are created; to lead. No, we can not sit back and enjoy at the expense of the few in office. But, if a small job needs to be done I know we have plenty of people who can offer their time. And, if someone sees that a job should be done and wants to do it, let them enjoy helping out and the club as a whole will reap the benefits. Simply asking people what to do will get us no where. If you don't believe me, scroll through every other thread on this topic. It's not that people don't want to do the work, it is that these "OMAS-booster" threads are making it a job. Everyone here siphons nasty water, scrubs algae, cleans out skimmers/filters/sponges, etc. Why? because they enjoy the work. When will OMAS have people willing to genuinely make the club better? When the people enjoy the work. We have the ability to do great things, but lets do them for the right reasons.

I second that and could not have said it any better. My tank is a hobby and in priority it falls behind everything else that is important to me. Thanks Jared

:) so i stand alone... :)

Thank you Jared, We Bobby and I, do work 5 @ 10 hour days come home and take care of our tanks and our coral farm now about 750 gals. Bobby take calls daily helping people in our group as well as people not in the group we are also on our own trying to get a couple speakers lined up (no details to post at this time, no questions please). We do actively take part in everything our group is doing. In the past, present and will continue to in the future. We love the hobby and our coral farm is growing. I would like to see more of our knowledgeable people step up to the plate and give a 5min. speech on different subjects at our meeting. We have had some really good and informative meeting in the past lets keep it going. Thanks you guys. Judy and Bobby
