What do you use to raise magnesium?

Interesting.

I've always tried to push my mag over 1400 from things I've read here on RC and heard around.

More recently, I've read more and more that questions that and says keep it in the 1280 to 1350.

It's getting a bit confusing.

Stephanie,

I've been using the Red Sea Coral Pro Salt and running a calcium reactor also. The media I'm using is the Caribsea course. I do notice that the Red sea salt I'm using has a low dkh in the mixing container.
Here is what my parameters have been consistently reading.
dkh- 10 (api test)
calcium- 475 (salifert)
magnesium- 1345 (salifert)
salinity- 1.025

Those readings have been steady and true since I dialed in the reactor. Don't know if that helps, but you never know. BTW, I'm not using dolemite chips. From what I can tell, my mag. is getting boosted up from the reactor. Because it's not that high in the mixing container.

I think my magnesium will probably be fine once I get the reactor dialed in (I am having a heck of a time  ) The mag in the tank tested at least 1500 today. I don't think I'm going to worry too much about my water change water if that keeps steady. lol

What did you do to get it to go up?

Dow mag flake

Dow mag flake

I had some of this from tank tour last year.

I've pounded my tank with Tech M, Seachem Reef Advantage and Brightwell Aquatics Magnesion-P trying to get my change water and my tanks Mag up. It's been difficult and lately I've started losing stuff.

This week I started rummaging thru my storage closet and pulled out the Dow Mag flage and dosed the tank. It popped the Mag up immediately. Haven't had time to follow it even a week yet to see how it sustains, but wanted to come here and ask:

1) anyone else using this;

2) anyone know of any pro's/con's of using this I should watch for?

Thanks in advance for info......

Apologies, Stephanie, for taking over your thread. I went to page 3 to find it, so I thought you were done with it

no problem.

I know several people use the dow flake. I've never been brave enough to try it out. I would love to hear some first hand how to's and such.

Stephanie,

Please explain............. 'brave enough' !!!! sounds like...

go ahead and pour concrete in your tank, I might do it too if your stand doesn't collapse :eek1:

Possibly,

there is a chance,

I could have maybe,

slightly,

exagerrated,

a little bit....

my bad......

DowFlake is relativily safe. Randy Homles Farlely did a analysis on it a while back and came up with great results. In fact, his website sells it. They are a RC sponsor as well
