what fish will eat mushrooms but not SPS?

Like the title say's, I'm looking for a fish to eat every mushroom in my tank but will leave LPS & SPS alone, any suggestions? I'm really tired of cutting shrooms of the rocks only to have them reapear a few weeks later.

Good luck with that; none that I know of. I just performed an exorcism with a scissors with some good effect. Did not get all of them, but got a lot. In two weeks, I will do it again.

Seriously though, none that I have ever heard of or tried. IME zoas and some LPS at least will also be toast.

After scraping and cutting the shrooms... basically mangling them as much as possible, THEN cover them with kalk paste/joe's juice/etc.... let sit for at least 20 minutes. Repeat as needed. Worked for me.

If you're looking for something to eat shrooms you might not even be looking for a fish but rather, an invertebrate that would like the taste of softies and shrooms. There might be some nudis out there but I'd say just manually remove them as nudis are very food-specific creatures.

I am in the process right now. Phase one complete. Good progresss but not complete. Phase II coming up. :strooper: Peter's recipe is a good one.

This is one of those "individual fish personality" experiences, but I had a Pterois volitans (Volitan Lionfish) that went around and literally sucked all of the red mushrooms off of my rocks. They were the only mushrooms I had, and he didn't touch any other corals. It was the weirdest/funniest thing I'd seen to date.

With that said by no means do I recommend you adding a Lionfish to have them hopefully suck mushrooms off your rocks, but I wanted to share my odd experience.

I've tried all other methods to get rid of them only to have them pop back up. I was thinking of adding this guy but I don't know how well he'll get along with my falme angle that been in there for 2 years

I don't have a problem moving my clams or zoa's to another tank as long as I can get rid of thease shrooms once and for all.

Mushrooms are a curse! I will never put another mushroom in my tanks agains. My Regal angel will occasionally nip at my mushrooms but not enough to make any difference. I need to go on a mushroom eradication campaign one of these days.

I have 2 peppermint shrimp that ate every aptasia in my coral QT and then went on to eat every mushroom in there also. They havn't bothered anything else but I don't trust them enough tp put them in my DT.

Peppermints never touch the shrooms and I have 6 in there.

IME i had a pakistan butterfly in my 400 gallon sps reef i had to remove it when he developed a taste for my expensive ricordias,yumas, and Mushrooms he never bothered any sps or lps.... that said its not a shure thing as someone above stated every fish has its own taste buds and personality

I had a majestic angel that chomped on my shrooms but also nipped at my clam. If you don't mind moving the clams it might work. My friend kept one with his sps.

Tom I had the same problem, tank over run with shrooms and polyps. Finally got sick of them and gutted the whole tank. Any rock that had something on it is outside in the rubbermaid now. A bit extreme but it gave me a chance to reaquascape and start new, corals were getting to big anyways. I'm gonna have to go thru the tank again cause there are still straglers ppping up, NEVER again will I put shrooms or polyps in my tanks, there like Xenia. LOL

get a starfish . Chocolate chip stars will eat mushrooms (Discosoma Rhodactis etc.).
Easy to catch and remove if it's misbehaving, too

Racoon Butterfly (and many other Butterflies) will eat mushrooms but (also) anything else that's fleshy like LPS corals...

I would like to suggest that just like any other coral or anemone, if it thrives in your tank it *can* become a pest. I personally consider Idaho grape monti to be that. But that's another story...

Point is, if you have a tank completely overrun by nutrient rich water loving corals, you may want to consider some husbandry changes in addition to being more conscientious about what corals you place in your tank.

definitely worth looking into as a means of control.

Shrooms and Xenia won't thrive in my aquarium the way that I'm running it right now (nutrient poor).

Hey Tony...I hear you, man that must of been a huge job considering how big your tank is and the amount of rock you have :eek1: my problem is just with shrooms, luckily when I had Xenia it just melted away and have never been able to keep it since. I've really grown to hate shrooms and hope to get rid of them without removing the rock, someone suggested to use a piece of pond liner and cover them with it, so I'm going to try that, but something tells me it's not going to work, I'm leaning towards a angle or a butterfly but not sure which one yet.
