just another method to increase flow in your tank by using a pump that directly suctions water out of your tank then directly returns the water back to the tank. the water doesn't go through the sump or any filtration system.

many use this method to eliminate the clutter of powerheads in the tank. another advantage is the mimimal head loss of pumps when set up in a closed loop system. hth.

Closed loops uses a pump to intake and output water directly from your tank. The water will not go through your sump (if you have one), skimmer, UV, etc.

The purpose is to add turnover to your system w/out the use of powerheads inside the tank. A person can have one pump for turnover through a sump, and another 1 (or 2, 3..) pump(s) for additional turnover through the tank.

thx alot guys... really interesting stuff... is this closed loop method desired, or does it really matter?

i'd say desired. powerheads clutter up the tank plus you have to clean them regularly. this becomes a PIA if you have multiple powerheads.
