what is going on here?

I've had this monty (please help with exact ID) since October 09. In the past week, it developed a white patch at 9 o'clock. Polyps gone. If it is a nudi, how can one pop up after 3 months when no new monties have been added? It's encrusted so I can't take out to dip without breaking it. What should I do?

Do you have any euphyllia? Sometimes my hosting clownfish would rub off a tentacle that would float around and kill off a spot on my sps where it landed.

I have a small torch. Hopefully that's all it is and won't expand.

Just make sure it doesn't spread and no new patches appear. My red planet got a bald spot from a floating euphyllia tentacle and it healed after a week or two.

If necrosis sets in you could try and put a large glob of super glue gel on a popsicle stick or similiar and glue over the area into the good tissue a 1/8" or so.

Well. the area is expanding so I don't think it's the tentacle. The superglue sounds like a good idea. Anyone else try that?

Frag a good piece and if the spot continues to spread and you have any more montis I would get the colony out. They grow fast and there is no reason to risk your other colonies. If its your only colony, try to get a piece into a quarantine tank and just see what happens to the main colony.

IME Nudis are not that neat and they will munch all over the coral, not just in one small expanding patch.

I would absolutely not rule out nudis. What happens with the top of the coral (that is affected with nudis) is it will slime at first, and then will be followed by a decaying session. Once it decayed, it will be shown as a white spot, ala your photo.

uuuuuum hard to say from the pic- but any monti that looks like that first offender maybe nudis/ maybe something fell in that particular area remove the coral and inspect.

Maybe better at night with a flashlight that would def be your best bet. As far as recognizing them and possibly treating them well there's tons of info around good luck.

I found the offending organism. I siphoned out 4 nudi's unfortunately 2 flew off into the the tank somewhere. Hopefully into the wrasse's mouth. They are bigger than I thought they'd be.

How many montis do you have in your tank? The answer here will help formulate a game plan.

I would take out that entire digi and dip it in revive. Blast all the montis off with a turkey baster while dipping it and then glue anywhere you see damage. Be liberal with the glue, the coral won't mind.

I only have small pieces cause my tank is only7 months old. I have a red that's 8 inches, two 1-2 inch grape cause it broke in half, 1 purple cap, and the above.. The coral above is encrusted to the rock. It will probably come off in pieces.

So I was right. Next thing to do is get yourself a Yellow Choris Wrasse (aka Banana Wrasse). They are excellent at getting rid of these nudis.

I forgot to ask, what does super glue do to the damaged area?

What good does quarantining a coral do? Theoretically, the coral was in QT for 3 months before it showed any nudi's. There were no other monty's added after this coral was added. Monty nudi should only be present on a monty so other corals introduced should not have it. The sps I buy are so tiny. Usually 1 inch sticks that I dip in revive and inspect with a magnifying glass before it goes in the tank. I'm stumped as to how I got these nudi's.

How do you get an encrusted coral off the live rock? The thing won't budge. If I really force it it will breakinto multiple pieces.

OK, I forced it off and broke into multiple pieces which I dipped in revive. There is still a chunk that I couldn't pry up even with a screwdriver. What shall I do with the remaining coral? Half is white because it was eaten or under the main piece.
