What is meant by "First Grade"?..in reference to clams.

Are there other 'grades'?

There are three main categories you have your gold maxima's which tend to be the least exspensive, then your 1st grade which are your basic blue-purple with simple patterns, and then you have your ultra maxima's which are your exstravagant colors and have rare unique patterns. Hope this helps.

I'd also add that many wholesalers that don't deal with clams exclusively actually have 4 grades of clams; electric, being the best, ultra, first, and second, with color intensities and patterns correspondingly less impressive.

Maxima Clams have three main grades-
Ultra-best
1st Grade-second best (less unique color patterns)
Gold-nice but more common and less expensive

Crocea Clams have only two grades-
Electric-best (some of the most beautiful clams you will ever see)
Common-very nice but not as rare or colorful

Most others are sold by size or color.
