ok, i've heard this term used here all the time and i tried searching through the archives to find out what it is.

so WHAT IS MOLTING?

just to let you guys know, i have an OS that is about 3 inches long.

molting is the process that all crabs & shrimp
use for growth, basically they find a comfortable spot,
split their shell (exoskeleton),back out of it,
swell themselves up with water, harden up in a day or so,
& come back out looking bright n' shiny (& bigger).

How long before my pepp. molts? I have had him approxiamitely 3 weeks. He is bigger when I first got him but wouldn't I have noticed the molting?. He is usually in front of the tank all day.

would you have noticed? probably not.
during molt, crustaceans are extremely
vulnerable to predation, being soft & squishy,
so to survive it (some don't), they find a hideout
until the molt is complete. in 30 years, i've witnessed
1 skunk & 2 CBS molts.
many shrimp molt within a week of being placed
in a new tank for some reason, after that, they (mine)
average a molt a month, usually after a water change.
BTW, females can only be impregnated when soft,
& both sexes stand guard while the other molts
(in mated pairs, a.k.a. CBS) & i leave the molt in the tank
as some shrimp will consume the castoff for minerals.
