please tell me.
my nitrates are about 25 right now the tank is 4 months old.
Ive been using tap water and letting it sit for 5 days with a heater and air stone, i add my salts on the fifth day and do water changes on the 7th day

Im hearing tap water has nitrates, so what is r/o water?

TIA

Water that has been filtered with a Reverse Osmosis filtration system. Usually it is much better than tap water and RO/DI or deionized water is even better. RO removes up to 98% of all the impurities and DI removes the rest so RO/DI water is so pure it is about as good as it gets.

so do i need to buy a r/o machine? or do I buy r/o water? (5 gal. a week tank change on a 45 gal tank)

isent an r/o machine like 300 bucks?

I would purchase a unit, way more convienent and probably save you money in the long run. airwaterice.com make great units, such as the typhoon III for 199, comes with a free tds meter and float valve. plus the best customer service I have ever dealt with, highly recommended.

5 stage high quality unit that many reefers here on rc use.

Depending on where you live RO water can be had for as low as 25 cents per gallon at places like Water & Ice stores. In the long run though an RO/DI is a good investment, you can even use it for drinking water, cooking and ice makers.

ok. im having a nitrate problem (little one) and i cant buy a r/o machine right now. what would I buy at the grocery store? just spring water? or is it different

thanksa so much

Its different. Spring water is just water from a spring. It is no better or worse than well water depending on the spring or well. RO water is purified through the RO process. Some bottled water is RO but is pretty expensive. Distilled water is very pure, it just used a different method of purification than RO.

If you have a LFS around your area chances are that they sell RO/DI water and it proably isn't that expensive, My LFS sells the water for .50cents so Thats where I go for water changes, as I can't install a RO/DI unit in my apartment complex where I live, but as soon as I move to our new house later this year that will be one of the first upgrades to my house as it can be used for many other things like AZDesertRat said...

Walmart's drinking water is filtered by reverse osmosis and sells for about 60 cents a gallon. Just read the labels and make sure it says 'filtered by reverse osmosis' on the bottle. But you definitely save money in the long run by just buying the unit.

bought some r/o water today from lfs. looks like ill be going this route for now anyway. hope i can get a handle on my nitrate problem (tap water has lots and my over feeding as well did me in)

wish me luck. i need it

Be sure and ask the LFS how often they test the TDS of their water and at what levels they replace the filters at. Some stores slack off on this quite a bit and the water you're buying isn't up to snuff. Or, you could buy your own TDS meter.
