I assume that it is originally from a volcano and that over time wave action has ground it into a fine sand. It doesn't affect the pH so it shouldn't contain calcium based materials. Anyone know?
You wont find any sand that will buffer at the ph levels kept in a reef tank. This is why in a calcium reactor you have to add co2 to lower the ph to an acidic value so the media will dissolve.
