What is this?

I bought this last year. I've never seen one before. It looks like a carnation but its not.

looks like a finger leather...have you got a picture of it closed up? it is hard to see the structure...

I looks like a finger/devils hand leather with really feathery polyps.
Can you disturb it a little to get it to retract it's polyps and take another pic?
In any case, its a very nice piece...
