if you have a PG&E Smartmeter (which you likely have), go to PGE.com and look at your usage. You can view it in detail down to the hour. Make an audit of all your appliances wattage and you can figure how long they are ON and figure the kWh usage.
$447 seems a lot, that's probably 1500kwh for the month!! What temp do you heat your house to? Dec-Jan was pretty cold. Lowering your thermostat setting and turning off heat completely when nobody is home will save you a lot in gas and electricity bill.
If you have a PC computer that is running 24x7, that's about 500-700 watts running 24 hours, thats 500kwh usage for the month for a PC with 700watt power supply (1/3 of your total consumption). At tier4 rate, will cost about $180. Replace that with a laptop that you turn off when not in use.
My bill was $170-$200 before and I think it was too high (considering my house is not big and don't have much appliances). I replaced one 24cu ft refrigerator, a chest freezer and a small dorm fridge with a new 32cu ft refrigerator, an old 42" plasma with a 55" led, and my last bill went down to $130 and it was only 2 weeks out of that billing cycle I had the new appliances. I expect my next full billing cycle with the new appliance to be under $100.
Fluorescent lighting used to be considered energy efficient, but that is not the case anymore these days. I figure I can replace my 320watt (8 40w tubes) kitchen lights with LED lights and be using 45watts only.
If you cannot cut down on power usage now and in the next 20 years (you plan to keep your tanks running and the number of occupants in your house will remain the same or grow), then getting solar will make sense.
