What is your Electric Bill PGE?

Hey guys,

My bill has been pretty high lately and I'm not sure if it's because of my 150g tank being heated to 78, or other factors, such as leaving on too many lights, laundry, etc.

My last bill was $447.

Is this on par with what you guys are paying?

Thanks,
J

It's depend on your house structure, size, total number people and number of people stay home during day time. Those are factors in you PGE bill.

It depends on the heat zone you live in and if you have gas service also or all eclectic, If you have gas and electric, your allotted less therm before you reach a higher pier pricing. in Sf and the coast they pay higher rates because they don't need AC, in the East bay, we have lower rates and in Sacramento and the valley the rate are even lower. The amount of people, and house size will surly increase your bill, but you get the same amount of therms if there is one person in the home or 20.

$445 for a single 150g is really high. I pay that much for all three of my tanks: 375g, 110g, and 150g, all of which are maintained at 76 degrees in the winter and 78 in the summer.

I think you should be paying $200 tops.

Around $360 here 105g and a 60g frag.. I think the majority of my recent increase has been the electric space heater in my daughter's room though. I average around $275-300..im on the coast and pay more for everything lol.. Don't even want to talk about water with a corner Lot with full lawn =(

And if your neighbors were stealing power for pot it would be more than that lol.. I knew people who's bill was about $2k and weren't even really big time..

I suggest you buy one (or more) of those Kill-a-watt gadgets and know exactly how much Electricity you are using for your setup.

my $0.02

your power prices will vary depending on what time of day you use power.
*you can thank smart meters for this price difference as now PG&E can track when the average household uses the most power however you can use this to your advantage to save money using big appliances during off-peak hours*

if your using MH and change lighting schedule so its not on during prime time you will save alot....or go with some LED/T5's, doubt your heater or power heads/ pumps are really using that much power most are very low consumption of a few watts.... turn your household water heater down a little no one needs flaming hot water I have mine set to low and its plenty hot on the hottest faucet/ shower setting, also leave lights off in rooms your not in a high power bill is also a good excuse to barbeque more ....5 gallons of propane lasts me a few months worth of cooking on the grill, way cheaper then running an electric oven for hours to make a roast and it usually tastes better.....

+1 on the kila-watt meter to measure what you're using the most.
That way you can factor out and sacrifice what isn't needed.

if you have a PG&E Smartmeter (which you likely have), go to PGE.com and look at your usage. You can view it in detail down to the hour. Make an audit of all your appliances wattage and you can figure how long they are ON and figure the kWh usage.

$447 seems a lot, that's probably 1500kwh for the month!! What temp do you heat your house to? Dec-Jan was pretty cold. Lowering your thermostat setting and turning off heat completely when nobody is home will save you a lot in gas and electricity bill.

If you have a PC computer that is running 24x7, that's about 500-700 watts running 24 hours, thats 500kwh usage for the month for a PC with 700watt power supply (1/3 of your total consumption). At tier4 rate, will cost about $180. Replace that with a laptop that you turn off when not in use.

My bill was $170-$200 before and I think it was too high (considering my house is not big and don't have much appliances). I replaced one 24cu ft refrigerator, a chest freezer and a small dorm fridge with a new 32cu ft refrigerator, an old 42" plasma with a 55" led, and my last bill went down to $130 and it was only 2 weeks out of that billing cycle I had the new appliances. I expect my next full billing cycle with the new appliance to be under $100.

Fluorescent lighting used to be considered energy efficient, but that is not the case anymore these days. I figure I can replace my 320watt (8 40w tubes) kitchen lights with LED lights and be using 45watts only.

If you cannot cut down on power usage now and in the next 20 years (you plan to keep your tanks running and the number of occupants in your house will remain the same or grow), then getting solar will make sense.
