What pipes to use for plumbing?

I am new to this hobby, I am building a sump/refugium. I have a 44Gal. tank using a 10Gal. as my sump. I am not sure what my options are is PVC the only way to go? Is there a thicker tubing I can go with? I have the basics of plumbing BUT need all the help I can get..!

Standard sch. 40 PVC is fine. I like 1 1/2" pipe for drain lines as it is less likely to get clogged, 1" will work though.

pvc if fine, or you could even go with vinyl tubing, it is easier to use, but more expensive.

Do I use the same size drain as I do return? What kind of vinyl tubing That would be a lot easier Also can I mix it up using both PVC and Vinyl? Thank you again for feed back!

Return lines are normally either 1/2" or 3/4". Hard pipe your drain, then soft tube the return IMO.
