What type of coral/plant is this?

This came attached to a piece of LR I bought. I bought another piece yesterday that has the exact same type of growth on it. This has been in my tank for about 3 months without much change in color or size at all. My LFS refered to it as 'a polyp'.

Any ideas as to what it is?

Candycane or Trumpet. In bad shape.... may pull through with good water quality..... may not.

the term 'Polyp' can be used to describe virtually any coral. Most corals have 'Polyps'. It's usually the part that extrudes or 'sticks out' from the coral. Often doubling as both mouth and anus.

The name is Cladocora also known as the Ivory tube coral. Page 88 of Corals by Julian Sprung the Oceanographic Series.

After doing a Google image search for 'Cladocora', thats exactly what it is! Thanks!

I wonder how I can take better care of it? Should I try hand feeding it something?

Yes, I would try feeding it a zooplankton food like cyclop-eeze or similar product. You could even try small mysis or brine shrimp too.

I have some frozen mysis cubes...maybe I could turn the flow off and sprinkle some crushed up over it to see what happens?
