Whats going on here?

I'm keeping a torch under less than ideal lighting, in a nanocube 12 DX, 4wpg pc. Its looking a little unhappy but I should be moving it to an aquapod on thursday, the 24 gallon and it will have 150 Watts of PC when I am done with it, anyways today I put my retrofit light ontop of my tank, its a 96 watt quad tube 50/50 the torch seemed to love it, the polyps swelled and it was really colorful, then I flipped it around so the whole thing got light, and it looked good for about 15 minutes, then the polyps shortened up, they were still fat but they were only like 13 mm long and they looked like they had a black hole at the base of each, I need to get new batteries for the camera before I can take any pics but it was a bit disconserting, it was either little holes in the tisse of the tenticles or the skin was just streatched very thin over a small bump on each tenticle.

I sure hope this isn't a stupid question and is one with a good answer, thanks.

Its in an area of low to moderate flow, the tenticles are tossed about a bit but its by no means too much. I have no nitrites or ammonium, nitrate fluctuates from 6-12 ppm, pH is a bit low because its a relatively new tank, about 8.1, I dose lots of kalkwasser, not sure what the numbers are, but coraline and clams are growing, So it must be good. Since that first day under the higher lights the problem has not reoccured, So I was unable to get a pic.

nitrates are kinda high. i am sure they would be a lot higherr if you didn't have any clams in there.

The 12 was from before clams (actually just after a tank crash, I left it with a cleanup crew and $30 dollars worth of Zoas while I went on break, three weeks with no attention, only lost the zoas and two emirald mithrax crabs) and the 6 from the last time I tested, unfortunately I'm overstocked on fish till I switch tanks tomorrow and pick up some more live rock.

i think its the lack of maturity in the tank. not just nitrates. And lots of kalkwasser?, watch what your doing with that stuff. And always check your levels before you dose anything. ( i learned a rough way ). Good luck.

As far as Kalkwasser doseing goes Ithought about it an figured that if I was overdoseing the worste that would happen is that I would creat limestone, I am careful about the pH and everything seems to love it when I dose at night (pH fluctuations are sort of evened out),

The tank was 6 months old at the time, I switched tanks and stiring the sand really did a number on the critters, I lost my wrasses and the smaller of the heads on the torch and my ricordea florida and candy canes both shrunk down a little, fortunately everything is spreading out again.

Does anyone have a link to a thread or article on euphyllia behavior?

yeah i decided on redoing my aquascaping a few weeks ago, because i had to much LR which ment i also had to much detritus. And when i did that i lost my baby clown tang and my doty back got pop eye also =(
