Never mind the name, it's worthless.
Trust me!
P.S. I'll give you $20 for it.

Just kidding. Where's you get it if you don't mind telling?
Awesome frag! Congrats!

For a minute there I didn’t know if you were kidding. I found it online and brought it with a bunch of zoa. I wanted to see if it has a name. Since I’m kind of new to corals I want to catalog what’s in my tank. Is it a common Acan?

it is a fairly common species, but certainly not a common color. I would give you 21 dollars for it :-)
I must have paid too much for it then:eek:

A Echinata or subechinata. A word of warning. Any coral that intrudes on its space will lose. If a fav frag falls on it, it will be stung to death. So arrange your corals accordingly.

It looks like one I saw on Atlantis' site a while back. I can't remember if they called it Echinata or Subechinata. It's VERY nice, and has alot of heads, I don't know what you paid for it but don't let these jokers fool ya...That looks like a pricey piece. I read that if the orange starts to turn green then move it to lower light and it will orange up again, but I've never had one of these ones.

Doh, what am I saying??? It's awful! Send it to me at once so it shames you no longer LOL :D

So it 's a rare? I bought these with a large zoa order. I think I paid $50-60 for it. It looked good on the web site. I was suprised how intense the color is in my tank.

This type of coral is pretty commonly seen in areas our corals are usually collected from. BUT, this nice of a color isn't too common in captivity, so I think you got your money's worth! I would pay that much for that coral, I am really picky about what I will put in my tank, but that's a very nicely colored one. If you spot feed it, it will love you very much and show it with better polyp expansion and fast growth. Have you tried feeding it yet?

:eek1: I didn't know I had to feed it? Maybe that's why the small frags of some other I have don't grow much.

Echinata's are actually pretty fast growers even when not fed, at least faster than the lords I have. Very nice color on that one, good purchase.

It helps. I don't know that you HAVE to feed them, but all the people I know who have them do feed them.
What would I feed it?

They like really tiny pieces, like cyclopeeze or frozen baby brine. You can also go to the seafood counter at your local grocery store and purchase a variety of raw, unseasoned meats like scallops, prawns, salad shrimp, squid or calamari steak. I freeze the chunks large then grate them with the fine side of my cheese grater. I then freeze this goop into small cubes using old fish food packages so I only have to thaw a little at a time for feeding. You can also squash the mix into a thin, flat bar on wax paper and once it's frozen solid keep it in a ziploc freezer bag to keep freezer burning down - just break a small chunk off at feeding time. The thinner you get your bar the easier it is to break small pieces. You can use the plastic part of a syringe (no needle) or an eye dropper to get the food directly to the mouths, you will need to turn off your pumps so the food will settle on the mouths & give the coral time to swallow it before starting flow again. Sometimes you have to fend off fish because they'll learn really quick to go to the coral for a good meal the second you remove your hand. Do you have any shrimp or crabs in your tank?

You mentioned you had other corals you weren't feeding that weren't growing - do you know what type they are? Some of them do better without foof than others...
