I was in Exotic Aquatics today in Lake in the Hills / Algonquin and was talking tothe owner about this product he was carrying called Vanish. It is suppose to remove all hair algae within 5-6 days. Add 2 drops per gallon for 6 days turn off protien skimmer and remove any carbon. He has tried in on some of the tanks he does maintanance for and he swears by it. he did say it was completely reef safe and he has done it on a few full blown reef tanks with SPS, Anenomes, invertabres, etc. Has anybody heard of this product or used it?

Thanks

I have used it. It works well. Follow the directions exactly. It will require harvesting the dying algae as it releases from the rock. I do not agree about totally reef safe. My LPS and leather, colts, type corals did not like Vanish at all. They all retracted and stayed that way for several months. I lost a colt and a leather. Fish, clams, sps, cleanup crew, starfish, all ok. Just my experience.

I personally think you are better off with a Sea Hare or two and let them eat your problem away. Then correct your water issues to stop further outbreaks.

Wouldn't it be better to just use Rowaphos and reduce the silicates and phosphates to zero? IME the algea would quickly die after that and you would not risk your corals.

Bryan,

You running that stuff n a Phosban reactor?
You can use it in a reactor (preferred method) or in a bag in your filter, sump or anywhere where there is good flow.
If you use a bag fill it tightly to prevent the media moving around and releasing small particles by crumbling, if you use a reactor with fiber and sponge in the output keep it slightly fluidized to prevent clumping from carbonate precipitation.
