where do rare coral come from?

where do these nice acros come from? IV NEVER SEEN ANYTHING NICE at the wholesalers except for aquacultured pieces..

so where do they come from? does LA get all the good stuff and FL wholesalers are shipped crap. or .... O_O in florida the only way im able to get anyhtkng nice is by trading with people in CA!

a lot of it has to do with cherry picking at LAX

then a lot of it has to do with getting in "average" corals and them turning nice in captivity

Gotta get your own distributer overseas and pay the extra to have it direct shipped over here to Florida so no one can cherry pick out of it. Search hard and make lotsa friends

Actually, the corals in LA aren't that great right now. Every store in town has some acros but they're all bleached or browned. Most of the SPS here are a little rough around the edges and do require some care. Sometimes you'll get lucky though and find a frag that somebody traded in.

I know that 2 of the stores I frequent here in Broward get stuff transshipped - coral reef farm and reef's edge. IME, wild caught is kind of a crap shoot to see how it's going to turn out. I've had much better luck with aquaculture colonies or frags from captive colonies.

There's also plenty of good stuff available just trading with other hobbyists here in FL. For example, this was a small frag I picked up last November (under actinic):

i have found that if it dos not have tyree on the end of it or something like that. it is not worth anything to any one unless it is a soft or a LPS. IMO

^^ one thing i definitly need to do is replace my vhos in a better combo ( 1 5050 to 1 actinic instead of 1 day to 1 actinic) i think it will give a better look
