where in town to buy snails?

I've come to the conclusion that I need more snails to keep my sand stirred up a little more. Any suggestions where to buy them? I am thinking cerith are the best for this? I could use a little more help on keeping the glass cleaner too, so I will likely need a variety pack.

the only thing i buy from living seas in park ridge is snails, because sometimes they have a sale where they are $1 each! You should call them up and find out when their next sale is, and raid them :D

i got a great package of snails from premiumaquatics shipped ground(that is next day to chicago).

also downtownpets usually has some. id call first though.

i disagree i think cerith's are wonderful for the sandbed, mine are digging all the time. I rarely see them and forget they are there until i uncover them during WC with the syphon...i think they do more for my SB than do my nessarius

scotts actually has a great snail selection and is one of the only places i found an abundance of queen conchs...my favorite thing in my tank i think...

Buy a little of both Cerith and Nassarius. They both like to dig into the sand and eat algae. Have both types in the tank and I've seen both dig into the sand and eat algae. Like everybody said look around make a few calls before you go out. Some stores order too many snails and will have some type of sale going.

for sand bed stirring, is Queen conch or fighting conch better? I have been under the assumption the fighting conch was.

I thought I bought Cerith snails, but the Melev website is making me think not. They hide in the sand, with a white antenae sticking up like a submarine periscope. When the food is put in the tank, they must sense the excitement because they come out for a piece of the action. But they don't have the cornucopia shaped pointy spiral shell like the Meleve website shows. They actually look more like the Nassarius photo.

Sounds like nassarius. I love them for DSB.

that looks like them. I could have sworn they said Cerith on the tank label, I will check tonight. I like them, whatever they are. They aren't eating any algae on the sand or glass, though.

No those are detritus eaters and reside in the sand. They will not consume algae, but will consume the stuff that leads to algae outbreaks.
