Where to place my clam?

Just bought my first clam...a 1 inch maxima. I have dual 400 watt ushio's as my main lighting. Where in the tank should I place the little guy?

1 inch clam? You will definately want to place it on the sandbed so you can spot feed it. A 1 inch clam doesn't survive on light alone, if any at all. It requires phytoplankton to grow and survive. Do a search for the pop bottle method if you aren't familiar with how to feed it. I hope you know how to take care of very tiny clams.

Howdy fellow Newfie! Great to hear from someone from the auld homeland.

Congratulations on your clam. SaltwaterKid is right though, the smaller ones do need more care. Live phytoplankton is pretty much a necessity for one so small. I culture my own which is pretty easy (check my web site for some tips) but you can also buy DTs Phytoplankton which is expensive but possibly better.

Good luck with your baby!

I agree with everyone else!

For feeding, you should remove the clam to a small, seperate contained where you can dose DT's, rather then overdosing the entire tank. Do not try to feed them with a turkey baster or some other similer tool. Clams do not respond well to sudden feeding like that.

ps definitally on the sandbed, but you may want to move him gradually upward if you dont have much lighting
