I have a common bright green open brain (which I dearly love )
and what my LFS calls a red meat coral. Are these similar yet from different families? TIA (sorry, no pics.)
By meat coral I assume they mean one with "meaty" thick-looking flesh or one that inflates and hides the skeleton. Probably scolymia or cynaria. Maybe lobophyllia, they're meaty looking.
Thank you for directing me to that website! My meat coral is a lobophyllia (still not sure what kind--saw some that kind of resemble mine). Anyway, if my lobobphyllia and my green open brain are near each other will they fight because they are from different families?
My lobophyllia has feeding tentacles at night (and I imagine they are fairy potent at stinging plankton and probably other corals)but the tentacles are fairy short- maybe an inch long. I think this is typical of most open brains. I don't know if any of them release poisonous compounds- it's possible but that's mostly a soft coral way of fighting. If they're 6" apart it should be fine. Lobophyllias are good eaters. Feed them a couple times a week an hour after lights out with a baster. My lobo likes Hikari mysis, brine shrimp and crushed bits of Formula 1 flake.
