I have very limited sump space and need a good skimmer so I am wondering what you guys would use or recommend. I will be using it on a 55gal tank with about 100lbs of mix Buna branch and Fiji rock? The brands I have looked at so far are Deltec, Aqua C, and Coralife.

Deltec hands down best performer :)

I've heard good things about coralife skimmers. Although I'd go with the one designed for a 125g.

Deltec would be great, but the cheapest one runs over $500

ASM skimmers are based on the euro-reef design and run much cheaper.

I like the Deltec but have a hard time spending double the money compared to the other brands.
2x the money for a skimmer that performs 5x better seems like a bargain to me.

I have used both the Deltec and the Aqua C. Both are worth what you pay. The Deltec is awesome and the AquaC is good...

Thanks,

Scott

Too bad the cheaper brands don't even come close to the production of the deltec hang on. I have used the remora pro, coralife super skimmer and they don't even come close to the production of the deltec. The german aquabee pump the deltec uses is far superior to any hang on pump that is used. It draws in more air and uses far less electricity. Its also nice not having a big ugly nasty pump hanging in the tank.

This is true, I just wish I could afford one. :)

I'm using an aquaC remora w/ a mag5. It works well.

there is no real good hang on skimmer under 400 dollars yet.......but i think in time we will see better HOB skimmers at more affordable prices... as competiting companys will see how well the deltec sells and try to undercut it by offering a knockoff.

You can try to duplicate the design of the skimmer but they won't be able to duplicate the modified aquabee pinwheel pump.

I recently switched skimmers in my 75 gallon mixed reef. I initially bought a high priced in sump beckett with a huge pump. After 2 years I decided to simplify my setup and switched to an Aqua C Remora. I could not be more pleased with the Remora. For way less money I am getting just as good skimming, way quieter, and much easier on the electric bill. People around here equate the more money you spend to the better reef you end up with. That has not been my experience with this hobby. Just something to think about.

I personally use and recommend the Coralife Super Skimmer! It's a great product for the price.

If I could afford it I would buy a Deltec. They are hands down THE best! And if you can afford the best up front you can keep it for years.

It all comes down to how thick your wallet is.

Why not a Turbo-flotor 1000multi? I have owned the Deltec MCE600 and the Turbo-flotor. I would say the Turbo-flotor was a better skimmer, the only problem is the large pump in your tank.

John.

The UK version deltecs are not as efficient as the deltecs that are imported to the states due to the difference in needle wheel design and voltage differences. Because of our volateg difference our deltecs pull in much more air than the european deltecs and therefore produce more nog.

If it works better because of the voltage difference (110v instead of 240v). The 110v Turbo-flotor should work far better than the European Turbo-flotor ;)
