Which Skimmer

Hi guys ive been reading around for a while and finally decided to make the first post :P
I currently have a 55gal fresh water cichlid tank and am making a list of what im going to buy when i finally decide to switch it to saltwater. Ive been looking into protein skimmers and cant decide which to get that is affordable(im in college :( ) and also one that will work well. I plan to start with fish only of course.
I looked around bigals and this is what i have found so far.
Im just wondering if the seaclone skimmers handle what they say they can since the price diffrence in them and the corallife is so diffrent.
between the seaclone 150 and the corallife65 which is the better skimmer? Also are there any others that you would recommend that are at a decent price? The skimmer will be going in a DIY sump that I will be starting within a few weeks.
Seaclone Protein Skimmer - 100 72.99
Seaclone Protein Skimmer - 150 84.99
Coralife Super Skimmer-Needle Wheel-65 Gallon 78.99

If theres anything i forgot just ask and i will get you the info the best i can.
Thanks,
Kurt

coralife Super skimmer

coralife Super skimmer

go with the coralife super skimmer (CSS), needle wheel version. i have a 125 in my DIY 20 gal long sump and it started producing good stinky skimmate a few days after it was up and running. there is a break in period with the CSS...for some it is a matter of hours, others take up to a week. just keep and eye on it and hook up some tubing from the collection cup to a gallon jug for the times the skimmer whigs out (typically at feeding time for me).

ok so the corallife ss 65 will be enough for my 55gal? Or would it be worth it to get the corallife ss 125? Or would this be overkill and not see any benefits from it? its only $35 more i guess not including shipping. Is there anywhere you would recommend to look for better prices or are these pretty decent? Also from what i have read the corallife ss skimmers come with everything i will need to get them running correct?
slowECUdiver what size tank is that corallife skimmer on ?

ok so would a mag 9.5 be enough of a pump for my setup? i have alot of headloss since i will have to run my pipes into the closet next to my tank. Using your headloss calc on the site a mag 9 will give me 300gph so im guessing a 9.5 will give me about 350gph. My question is will this be enough for my tank? Its a 55gal tank and the sump is being made out of a 30gal tank.

Dont but a seaclone, if you do you will become a member of the seaclone haters club. I have only heard good things about the coralife models. 300 gallons through your 55 sump seems pretty swell. best of luck to ya.

if you stick to that you will have a great ride:D

I have a SeaClone that works okay. It is hard to adjust and impossible to clean appropriately. You get what you pay for!!!

I use the 220 on my 55g. IMO bigger is better and the difference in price for this already cheap skimmer is worth the extra skimming ability.

I am a very happy customer and will be using css on all my tanks from here on out.

Do not get a seaclone and do not get a RedSea Prizm skimer. Best piece of advice I can give a starter after one year of trying both.

I just bought a CSS for up to 65 gallons for my 30 gallon tank.

Yes it does come with everything you need to make it work, unfortunatly i have nothing but sand in my tank ( LR should be in the tank in a day )

i didn't wash the sand when i put it in the tank so the water was very cloudy, the skimmer got the fog out in about 3 hours, if i remember correctly, but possibly much less because i left my house right after i turned it on and when i came home ( 3 hours later ) the water was crystal clear

I would look into the new ASM mini..... i have heard a lot of great things so far.... just like its big brother skimmers. Go to the ASM web page and check it out. Im my opinion ASM skimmers give the most bang for the buck. Not to say that the SS isnt a good skimmer (ive never had one so i dont know) but if you look around this site you'll find that overwhelmingly anyone who has bought an ASM is pretty happy with it.

I started with a seaclone 150 and did every mod in the book and and damn thing still didnt even come close to the amount of skim i get with my modded ASM G2. Good luck and welcome to salt.

Yeah thats it. It just came out not too long ago and so far i have heard that it works really well. I believe that in another thread i heard of someone using on their 55g because they couldnt fit anything larger into their sump.

As far as rating..... i have no idea.... i dont even think the company has given it a tank rating yet as it has just hit the market not too long ago. I am however, pretty sure that it includes the pump.... not sure what type of pump it is.... but i definitely know that it comes with one. All ASMs are sold with pumps.

If you get up early..... they search function here on RC usually works. See if you can dig up a thread or two on the ASM mini. I know that there are a bunch of people who bought then when they came out.....and i also remember seeing a thread of one with pictures and it looked like it was really suckin the skim.

I can tell you without any reservations at all though..... that the mini would beat the s*** out of even a modded seaclone! (except maybe that frankenclone....that thing was insane!!!!)
