was going to start vodka doseing but thought i'd go with vinegar as its cheaper and i dont get the temptation to drink so much !

do i use the clear distilled vinegar or doesnt it matter ?

thanks in advance.

I also use only the white vinegar in my tank, I always heard you don't wanna use the sented stuff but that may just be for vodka only

Cheap distilled white vinegar is the thing to use, unless you are wanting to experiment. Other types will have additional organics in them which will vary from brand to brand with, perhaps, different results.

There is no magic fixed dose. Start on the low side and slowly increase it over a few weeks, and then raise or lower it from there based on how the tank looks. Something like 5-10 mL per 100 gallons to start, up to double or triple that in 2 weeks. Then adjust from there.

I presently dose about 100 mL per day to my 120 with a total water volume of about 250 gallons. :)

Let me preface by saying I'm not currently dosing vinegar. But what I used to do was use the gallon of distilled vinegar from WalMart or the grocery store (it's extremely useful to have around anyway) and dosed 3 drops per gallon of water. Since I used a home-built dosing setup, counting drops was easy for me to time out. Figuring 20 drops per ML, it worked out to about 15 ML per 100 gallons, less than what Randy recommended but it's what worked in my case.

I did start lower and moved up until I had the results I was looking for. And I stopped because my dosing system was more trouble than it was worth. Get a real system. :)

The vinegar provides source of organic carbon which helps bacteria that take up nitrate and phosphate to grow.

FWIW, the dose I have have used for 3.5 years is close to the dose Randy notes. I use vinegar and vodka which have a combined equivalency (in terms of organic carbon) of approximately 272 ml vinegar for 600 gallons of water volume. Each tank has many variables that effect the optimal dose.
