White spot on montipora

More than likely the monti is growing if your talking about the white around the edges. Montis are very fast growers in the right conditions. The white spot in the center will grow back as soon as it heals fully. How ever if it continuse to grow bigger (the white spot) then you may have monti eating nudibranchs in the tank. the best way to check is about 1-2hrs after the lights go off with a flash light to see if they are feeding on it.

That is how nudi's ate my monty. Was not random at all. i looked at night, they are very small (grain of rice or smaller) I siphoned with a baster and get out 2-3 a day

Thanks, the area grows a little every day. I first noticed it a couple weeks ago. The pic was taken on the 13th. Wouldn't nudis cause a lot more random damage? The recession is very uniform. I've been looking for nudibranches and pulled the monti out and looked with a magnifying glass on the under side and not seen any.

There aren't any corals close to the monti that would lead me to believe it has been stung.

I'm guessing my best course of action is to break off the white piece, do a revive dip, and hope that works. I see where some people seal a break with super glue. Is that normal?

Ca 440, Mg 1380, alk 6, nitrate 0, phosphate 0.01, ph 8.3, salinity 1.026

My alk dropped down to 4dKH and stayed there for several weeks and my orange cap didn't miss a beat. Can't say much about some of my other SPS though. Is this the only coral that's showing this STN? You mentioned that you looked at the underside for those montis. I hope you also looked at the topside where the recession was occurring as well since that is most likely where you will find the larger ones. Anyways, anytime i see a dead spot on a coral i try to frag it off as it will only attract algae. Especially since this STN is occurring on the outer edge. If it were occurring at the base of the colony then i would likely do a superglue. Lastly, if there is a chance that you have these buggers, don't squirt water at the colony IN the tank. Do that outside of the display since you can still pull it out. The last thing you want is to send these guys all over the tank and risk getting them on another monti (if you have any). For those that can't pull their colony out i would try to siphon those buggers out.

Thanks, I pulled the monti out, looked hard again with a magnifying glass and didn't see anything. I did a revive dip, broke off the dead spot, and after 3 days I don't see it receding anymore.

I'll post a follow up photo in a couple weeks to let you know how it went.

It looks much better. The area I cut off is definitely healing. The white you see was under the part I broke off. There is no more recession going on. I'm not sure if it was the Revive dip or just breaking off the receding section.
