Who are the SPS Veterans?

Who do you know has been keeping SPS for YEARS? Not 1 or 3 yrs... but longer. I was wondering who are the Veterans and are they still running their dominated SPS tank. A lot can be said by the way their tank looks and how established it is. They dont have to be a RC member either. Could be your neighbor. ;) Lets hear some stories to show us some accomplishments we all strive for.

Search for Pucci aka Carlos, he has been into the SPS for a long long time. He has a phenomenal 225 and his picture taking abilities are amazing.

Oh... I think I know that Carlos guy... doesn't he go by "hunny" sometimes? Oops... sorry, I didn't think I was supposed to say that! Haha... j/k Carlos is a great guy with a beautiful mature reef.

Carlos, takes alot better photos when his boyfriend is out of town.

If you want to get a deal on some awesome frags, find a weekend after Carlos and his boyfriend Chico have had a fight....

You can get Purple Monsters free when you buy a green digi.

ive been collecting sps for probably 4 years going back to my 60 gallon, which has been replaced over the years with a 120 and now 200. its amazing how much the hobby has evolved over the years. let me go back in time and list a few observations of the hobby back then
-beautiful solomon disks were being imported by bob menkin, our beautiful, famous tort originated from one of these disks and was distributed 1st by schweb. when solomon disks stopped shipping due to the civil war, fiji dominated the market
-bali aquaculture was non existent
-iwasakis(6.5k) were definitely the popular bulb of choice whereas today, 20k and 10k are probably in 90% of our tanks.
-only the true hardcore enthusiasts used 400s on a smaller tank, now everyone practically uses 400s or more on tanks smaller than 100gallons
-tyree limited editions only consisted of only the 1st few such as solitaryensis, purple monster, green aquaetaberculata. sought after most wanted corals were practically non existent in hobbyist tanks. now leng sy and turquoise albrohensis have been uncovered from who knows where. whether they're originals or not, who knows
-orange caps commanded top dollar in the market
-dsb was far more popular and now, more are getting into BB
-iron based phoshpate removers such as rowa werent available in the US
-DE 250 bulbs were mostly used in germany
-to get really nice sps, you'd have to either trade with a hobbyist or go to LA
-aquarium city had one of the sickest sps tanks around(not sure if this can be said today)

anyhow, im sure i missed a ton of other stuff...

id say veterans that i can remember would be:
steve tyree and all his original farmers
joe kelley
mike paletta
sanjay

I used to have tanks about 17 years ago with a lot of soft corals (anemones were the thing back then). Slowly had other things, but also watched the hobby grow. I got out of the hobby about the same time that SPS were just getting into the hobby back in 1994-1995 (I think). I recall (and I still have all my old FAMA's to confirm) that there was a guy in SoCal that was doing a lot of the original fragging. I think that guy was Tyree.

But others doing some cool stuff was Julian Sprung, Martin Moe, Thiel. There were a bunch others but I don't recall their names. I remember Sanjay's name appearing in a bunch of journals. But back then, he had just started and he was asking a lot of questions.

Pineapple House - he's a veteran too isn't he. About 2 years old back then........

I can check my old magazines to see who else was growing stuff.

I've been keeping SPS since about 94. The first SPS I ever saw in an aquarium was that year in a local reefers tank. His name is Kurt Loos ( his tank is in Paletta's Ultimate Marine Aquariums book). In 1995 Kurt and my friend Dave Wodecki opened a business here in Cleveland called the Coral Garden, and was the first retail business here in Cleveland to regularly stock SPS. Back then, most of their stuff came from SDC and the availability lists looked something like this:

Brown Acro - sm, med, lrg, xlg
Green Acro - sm, med, lrg, xlg
Blue Acro - sm, med, lrg, xlg....

You get the drift here. It was a real grab bag. I agree with ROAB that everything came through LA. Fragging was not that big back then as some hobbyists believed that that "open wound" would lead to infection and death of the colony. When Sprung and Delbecks first book came out, that was the first time most of here saw Tyree's tank. He was a speaker at several of the early MACNA conferences and it was then that I started realizing that I could keep the brightly colored SPS in captivity. Most of the pictures coming out of Europe with SPS, were brown and green, but Tyree's tank was full of color!

My first lighting consisted of 2x 175 5500K Coralife w 2x40w actinic on a 40gal long aquarium. I also went through the DSB stage and the bare bottom stage, the Jaubert method, with a wet/dry trickle filter and w/o. It seemed like every few months "the way" to do it changed. My first skimmer was a Sander's Piccolo ( about 6" high, in tank skimmer with a wood airstone:D

As for who's been keeping them for years, I don't know if I qualify or not, but I'll add:

Sprung and Delbeck
Kurt Loos
Dick Perrin
Ryan Baker - friend of mine and mod here on RC (rbaker)

Don't forget Larry Jackson and Richard Harker. Sometimes, I think reefing was more fun back then. There was less eccentricity and less exclusivity.

I've been keeping sps since 1998(6 years). First acro frag was bought from a store in Colorado where Coralite worked. I remember I was affraid to frag at that point, so he also sent me home with a free solomon island frag and some superglue. Ironically, that frag was an Australogyra, which isn't common. Back then, the hot coral was a Bali green slimer and the Orange monti. capricornis, both of which are really common now. When I moved to Atlanta, I took all my sps with me, and shared all the frags with Atlanta reefers. It was cool because no-one had a Bali green slimer here, and now practically all sps tanks here do. It brings a proud tear to my eye to know that they all mostly orginated from my tank.:)

Well lets see reefs i have been into for about 16 years. The sps addiction started in 1995. After 5-6 years of growth I lost all my hard corals in the tank instantly. It was because I put a few pounds of sand in my tank. The company that made the sand misrepresented it as black marine sand. Instead it was mined in Illinois and plastic coated for color. So I started over. This time with 98% cultured corals.

To sum..sps veteran? I don't know? I have had my fair share of mishaps, but I guess I have been at it awhile! Though after loosing 5-6 years of growth I felt like I had been through a war .....so maybe I am?

I'd have to say that Minh Nguyen's 450g inspired me to keep SPS.

I read just about every post from him in the SPS forums before I started my tank.

I'm not too sure how long he's kept SPS but I have to say he is a veteran.

reefcam, and steveweast(from my area) are others I'd suggest as veterans.

Now, who were the poineers from 15-20 years ago?

I have a friend who has an approx 550G tank SPS+LPS for many years.
Breeding damsels, Bangays and perculas succesfully.
Flame and nox, are mated, but without raising anything YET.
I'll try to post some pix from his tank, in a month or so when I'll visit him, if he'll let me.

SPStoner,

Kurt Loos and Coral Gardens ! Now thats some old names. Funny thing is Kurt got me started in the business side of the hobby. All my purchases up untill hooking up with him were retail. I was his main sps buyer way back in 1995 and early 1996. So many of those sps corals he sold back then came through my reefs. Unfortunately the nasty version of RTN hit during the summer of 1996 and that pretty much shut down the sps business for a few years. We limped along for awhile. Later on unfortunately Kurt and I had a buisness related falling out. Hey, stuff happens in the business world. No hard feelings. Last I heard though he was not in the hobby anymore.

wow, a cameo appearance from steve tyree himself. This is a rare occasion. Can't wait to get some of those LE corals from you!

Lawrence

Yes, Steve, presented his "technicolor SPSs' at MACNA-7 in'95. The buzz over the convention was errie--everyone was excited--what a rush. Thnx. Steve. Bob
