I had placed my two biggest maximas on the sandbed initially but they burrowed down into the sand until only their mantles were above ground. They coughed a lot because of sand irritation. I set them on some old large scallop shells and they attached and have been fine ever since. Makes them very easy to move around or lift out of the tank when necessary too.
as of right now, i just have mine placed on the sb. what i might do later on is get a piece of PVC, and place the clam on to that to prevent it from attaching to the rocks or SB bottom.
I've got my three max's on the sanbed (well..they are on flat pieces of liverock that are directly on the DSB). Only my crocea's are up on the rocks...
