Who here uses a battery back up for their tanks?

No you are not going overboard. Back up electricity is a good idea. At least for flow.

Corals can be without light for a few days but will perish without flow for a few hours. How you go about it is up to you. I have a battery backup on my Vortec 40. That will take care of short term needs, then a big generator for long term needs.

some on here use UPS systems. Im not that saavy. Flow is the most important, short term, IMHO.

its an easy thing to pick up......swap shop has guys selling brand new generators every weekend dirt cheep and not cheep models either I picked up a honda that sells new for $1500 for $300

Explain to her that it would suck to lose all your lie stock that your sort so much money and time to grow and care for. A side benefit is a generator can be used to power fridge, tv, small AC unit, etc. plus can you imagine the smell of a hot tank full of decaying matter.

You can also try freight harbor tools, I picked up a small generator that I bought specifically for the fish tank. It will run everything except the lights, and yet small enough and portable to set up quickly.

The only back up I have is the Vortech battery back up and that connects to my vortechs. Might just hook up one of them instead of two but we'll see. I'm always checking things with my Apex now so if I don't get an update then something cut out.

It may have been fixed in the latest update. But there was a known network connectivity issue with the apex where it would not respond and the network server needed to be reset. It has happened to me a couple times. There was a thread documenting the issue in the Neptune forum.

I wasn't aware of this, hopefully it has been fixed. Lucky for me, I decided to update before doing any setting up. Thanks for the input. :thumbsup:.

I have a battery back up (it can sustain 500watts for about 20 minutes), but I need another EB8 to run it properly with apex.

Also have a generator, battery operated airstone, and an AC to DC 300watt, car adapter just in case.

I too use Vortech battery backup. I also have an APC 1400 that i picked up for free (dead batteries). I replace the batteries and have been using it for two years now. my sump return is on the APC. two days ago me and 1000 of my neighbors lost powers 5 -6 times in one day. although most outages were short one was for and hour. Last year i lost power for 9 hours. this gave me the time i needed to setup generator and ran all lights pumps etc.
