whole house water filter/saltless softener for top-off?

It's not going to do what a RODI will, and it will leave some impurities in the water. But I guess it's better than using straight tap-water.

i figured ro/di is best. i'm using drinking water (supposedly RO) and the 'aquarium pharmaceuticals' DI tap water filter with no major issues.

anyone else have experience using water from a similar whole house water filter and saltless softener?

We used one for a tank back in the 80's/90's. We had a 6 foot, foot thick carbon cylinder and a set of ro/di like filters under the sink, with the carbon to take care of the whole house including showers, and that fancy filter to handle drinking and tank water. Had to be re-charged annually. And while it gave us very nice shower water---it didn't do so great for the tank, but then those were the days of crushed coral, pan-drip filters, wet-dry's and bioballs, so we had a lot of other issues, too.

does anyone have a recommendation on a good water quality test kit?

i'm looking to test my top off options and make sure i have little to no chlorine/chloramine, silicates, copper, phosphates, nitrates, iron, etc.

You won't be able to test copper low enought to guarantee it is OK.

The other info is probably best obtained from the water company itself. :)

i met with a water guy that wants to put a giant carbon filter that has catalytic and stuff in it...he says this will take care of my chloramines... either the entire house ..or just before my ro/di for tank only....

so the question is , is this a better solution then a small cat gac and carbon block to remove chloramines? ro/di will still be used ....
