Why do my clams keep dieng

my clams keep dieng i have 260 pcs on a 55 g all my aprametors are right cla 450 ppm and feed the dts i had a puprl/blue maxima3.5 inches and a gold maxim2.8 inches. the died at diffrent times but b4 they died there foots were not attached to the sand the foot was either ripped or not atched could it be a lightin issue the y were in the sand bed

Lack of light probably Maximas need MH lighting almost without exception.

the day before they died they were thriving with full mantles open

That's what clams will usually do before they die....they're often trying to get more light by really extending their mantles....if they don't have enough light they won't be all closed up....

Definitely not enough lighting for maximas and croceas. At that size clams will rely primarily on lighting to meet their needs.

it would be enough if theyy were at the top like 5 inches from top right?

Nope. Maybe in rare cases. That's not intense enough lighting..sorry They love (and need!) to be baked by metal halides. Pc's just don't have the PAR and don't penetrate through the water...even at 5 inches it's not sufficient.

i agree with peabody. i have some of my croceas pretty close to my halides and they just love it..

My only suggestion is to give your clam a lot of sunlight if you dont have mhs. I kept a maxima for year and half with pcs before I switch to mhs. I made the switch because my sps were turning brown, and I like pinks,greens, purples.......

i would have to disagree.
I have to Maximas 4 inches and a 2 incher.
they are both at the bottom of my 55 gallon tank under four 96 watt PC bulbs for the past 2 and half years.
They have also seen growth on the outer area of the lip.
strong light yes, but MH's are an option.

yea i know right where that is. that is a pretty nice development. i live in an apartment right across from the mall. what lfs do you go to the most?

You must be less than a mile from me. I go to the mall all the time, because My wive makes me. Well, I basically go to the following lfs.

1. All Sealife because John got me started.
2. Coral seas because it has healthy sps.
3. Reef life because it has sps.
4. Beverlys because its close and sometimes has good deals.

yea john helped me get started but now he is real expensive. pat at reef life gets some good stuff in so i make sure i go. pat has some good prices on clams so i always check those out and like you said, sometimes beverlys has some good deals!
