why fresh water deep clam?

what is the reason for fresh water deeping a clam? is it to give a sick a clam a better chance of survival or is it to prevent it from getting sick in the first place?

I dipped mine because they were sick with some type of pinching mantle disease, after which they recovered fully. From now on, however, if i get a new clam i'm going to give it a dip before it enters my tank to hopefully prevent disease in the first place.
