wierd edge on glass

im planning on drilling the back of my tank for an overflow, i noticed that the back glass edge is diffrent then the front. Its bumpy, the front edge is smooth. Does this tell me anything like if it was tempered? Or was it just lower quality glass?
Thanks

99% of the time tempered glass has to be sanded in order to be tempered..otherwise the little tiny chips etcetera would cause the glass to shatter once it is rapidly cooled down in the tempering process..

i am no glass expert that is just what i have seen and heard over the years...

with that being said i have also seen tempered glass with an edge like that before too....

was the tank a custom job?

where did you buy it/ who makes it?

generally only the bottom of the takns are tempered...unless it it is a larger tank..or a cube..

Im not sure if it was a custom or not. I recently bought it from a guy and he got it from someone else. He didnt know if it was tempered or not.
The sticker in the bottom say Dan 2-99 Dont see any name branding.
So it was made in 99 and if i can just find Dan and ask him :P
The tank is a 150gal 72x18x30 or so.
The wierd thing is the front glass has normal smooth edges, the back glass is like above on both sides. Think they replaced the back glass?

The front glass does have a chip out of it, does that mean it cant be tempered or it would have shattered?

not too sure man...i recently saw a tempered 30 cube at the LFS that had chip in the edge of the glass...

i really dont know what to say...maybe take the pic or the tank to local glass shop before attemping the drill...see what they have to say about the glass..

I work in a comercial glass shop and there has been many instances where i have accidentally chipped the edge on a tempered peice. All i can say is that is the days that i should of played the lottery! Usually you never get away with out it exploding! So basically dont assume its annealed glass just because of a chip or oyster as we call them. Just mark it up as some one (or you) got really really lucky!

I have literally seen TONS AND TONS of glass come thru our shop and have seen all different flaws and bumps etc on edges with no cosistancy to be able to tell you anything exactly to be sure. I can tell if glass is tempered by using my glass cutter on it (in and inconspicuos place like around the edge (not the edge per say....just the first 1/4 or so of the side i guess you could say) The cutter will make a distinctivly different sound and not score very well. Most of our tempered glass has a small stamp in the corner verifying it as safety glass but on rare ocasions we have to try and determine if a piece is tempered or not before trying to cut it. There is no way for sure to tell in your case if it is tempered or not. At this point it would be like rolling the dice since you dont know the manufaturer of the tank. And a piece like that will be costly to replace. Guess if you got it dirt cheap it might be worth the gamble but if you paid good money for it i would take it to a glass shop and have them determine if it is or not. Thats the best advice i can tell ya unless you want to get a 5 dollar glass cutter and try for yourself to determine if it is or not then i could help you with what it would sound like verses a regular piece of glass.

I have a friend that has a 1" glass hole saw and he has drilled tanks before. I havent done any yet but if you could explain it it might help. Would he be able to tell the diffrence since hes drilled non tempered before?

Thanks for your help, im trying to get away from the hang on overflow if possible.

Well the hole saw wont help cause about the time it made the first noise it would be all over with if the glass is tempered. If you or he has an actual glass cutter he or you could score the inside edge (behind the trim) to see if it is or not. You can get a glass cutter for alittle of nothing at a hardware store. Let me know and i will try to help as much as possible. I know where you are coming from on the HOB overflows..... blah!

i think i might have a glass score'er here. I will look tomorrow. Is that the thing used to just scratch the glass?
