I have a question regarding hair algae blooms. Will a clam help???? Will a clam export the extra nutrients present to curb this scurge??? If I wanted to get one which is hardiest??
Hi CAMEL SHRIMP,
I believe clams consume a small amount of nitrates but not enough to make a dent in a hair algae problem. Do you test your nitrates or phosphates? A refugium where macroalgaes like Caulerpa or Chatemorpha would probably be more beneficial. Squamosa and Derasa clams are probably the hardiest.
I do test occasionally, but I don't have too many hair algae outbreaks. the only outbreaks are due to over-feeding or supplementing in my case. Since I have metal halides I just want a couple of clams to absorb some extra nutrients.
