DON"T DO IT! It will kill him. I got rid of one with ease, and no harm to the mantis, (He's now living in a small tank I set up for him, very neat little dude!).
Here's what to do... First siphon off a bucket of tank water and have it ready next to the tank, you will also need a supply of fresh water (dechlorinated, or R/O water or distilled) and a turkey baster. Now, get the rock that it's living in, which I assume you must have located if you know he's in there, and place it in the bucket. You will want to be careful so it doesn't cut or smash you... I just try to not grab near a hole, but mine was only about 2" and not a huge threat. Suuspend the rock near the top od the bucket (not sitting on the bottom, put it on top of an overturned container or something, but keep it totally subberged with the "Mantis Hole" about an inch or two under the surface. Now, get the turky baster, fill it with fresh water, place the tip right above the hole, and squirt a load of FW into it. In my experience the mantis will RAPIDLY vacate the premises, too fast too see almost! You now have a mantis free rock with very minimal damage done from hardly any FW touching it, and a slightly alarmed and otherwise ok mantis in a bucket. Get the rock out before he goes back in, cuz they can swim, and get your hand out before he get's you!
Hey, I'd gladly pay for the shipping if you'll send this little dude to me (if you choose not to keep it). I am fascinated by these little things and really want to get some more. At the very least DON"T kill it... take it to your LFS... he's find someone to take it.
